Mark of the Beast or Financial Tool? A Christian Look at Cryptocurrency

Updated: Jan 22

As a financial planner who’s passionate about both digital assets and my Christian faith, I often find myself answering one big question:

"Nick, do you think cryptocurrency could be the mark of the beast?"

It’s a question rooted in genuine concern, and understandably so. Cryptocurrency, blockchain, and related technologies can feel complicated and overwhelming for many people. Add to that the warnings in Scripture, especially in the Book of Revelation and references in Daniel, and it’s easy to see why Christians might connect these innovations to the prophetic “mark” that could one day control people’s lives.

Over the years, I’ve worked with clients and friends who hold deeply conservative Christian beliefs. They’ve shared their worries about technology like cryptocurrency being misused by those with evil intentions, potentially becoming a tool for control. From the idea of a mark on the wrist or forehead to fears of economic exclusion for those who resist, these concerns aren’t far-fetched when you think about how powerfully technology can shape society—for better or worse.

But is cryptocurrency inherently dangerous? Or does the risk lie in whose hands the technology ends up? Let’s explore this important question through both a biblical lens and my perspective as a Certified Digital Asset Advisor.

Understanding the Mark of the Beast and Biblical Perspectives:

The concept of the Mark of the Beast is a significant topic in Christian eschatology, stemming from the Book of Revelation. It’s a symbol that has caused much speculation over the centuries, with many believing it signifies the ultimate form of control and allegiance to the Antichrist. According to Revelation 13:16-17, the mark is something that will be placed on the right hand or forehead of individuals, and without it, they will not be able to buy or sell.

For many Christians, this passage raises the question: Could emerging technologies like cryptocurrency, blockchain, or even AI one day become the “Mark of the Beast”? Is it possible that, in the future, a digital currency or a technology could be used to control people in the same way the Bible describes the mark?

It's a valid concern, especially when you consider how much trust we place in technology today and the growing dependence on digital platforms for everyday transactions. Some Christians view the rapid development of these technologies with suspicion, fearing that they could be misused in ways that align with the warnings from Revelation.

However, it’s important to recognize that technology in itself is neutral. The Bible doesn’t specifically reference cryptocurrencies or AI, as these technologies didn’t exist during biblical times. What the Bible does emphasize is that these technologies will be used for good or ill depending on who holds the power and how they choose to wield it.

While it's tempting to make direct connections between the Bible’s prophecy and modern technologies, we must first acknowledge that there’s no explicit scriptural link between the two. The mark is a symbol of allegiance to the Antichrist, not the technology itself. The Bible calls for discernment and wisdom when navigating such issues.

This is where I think Bitcoin stands out in a unique way. One of the reasons I’m so passionate about Bitcoin is because it’s decentralized. It’s not controlled by any single government, entity, or individual—it truly belongs to the people. In a world where we see the potential for powerful organizations to manipulate and control currencies or technologies, Bitcoin offers a level of freedom that aligns with my values of individual sovereignty and financial independence. It’s a currency that’s not susceptible to the kind of centralized power that could be used for evil purposes. In many ways, Bitcoin represents a safeguard against the very risks that the Book of Revelation warns about.

Technology: A Double-Edged Sword: Opportunities and Risks

Technology, in its various forms, has always been a double-edged sword. It can be a powerful tool for good, advancing society, improving lives, and spreading the gospel, but it also carries significant risks. This is especially true with innovations like blockchain, artificial intelligence, and the rise of digital currencies. While these technologies open up new frontiers for financial freedom and innovation, they also present challenges that can be misused if the wrong hands take control.

The Bible tells us that “there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9), which reminds us that technology is not inherently good or bad, it’s the intent behind its use that matters. Like any tool, technology can be used for the benefit of mankind or manipulated to control and harm. In the hands of those with good intentions, it can be transformative. But in the wrong hands, it can be a means of exploitation and oppression.

Opportunities:

Technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrency have the potential to empower individuals by removing intermediaries, offering more secure and transparent financial transactions, and providing greater access to banking for the unbanked. Blockchain’s decentralization can help ensure that power remains in the hands of individuals, rather than a centralized authority. This aligns with principles of freedom and autonomy, values that resonate with biblical teachings on the dignity and worth of each individual.

For example, Bitcoin offers a transparent, peer-to-peer network that allows anyone with internet access to participate in a global economy. This is a breakthrough for people in regions where access to traditional financial services is limited or even impossible. It is a direct form of financial freedom, removing barriers that might otherwise prevent someone from managing their wealth or accessing opportunities.

Risks:

On the other hand, the same technologies can be misused. Cryptocurrencies can be exploited for illicit activities due to their perceived anonymity, and blockchain-based platforms can be used for malicious purposes. Artificial intelligence, while offering incredible potential, also raises ethical concerns about privacy, surveillance, and the potential loss of jobs. With AI advancing rapidly, there are real fears about how these technologies could be used to control and manipulate populations.

One area of technology that concerns me more than blockchain and AI, however, is social media. The rise of AI-generated content has already caused confusion, where fake videos and images are shared as truth. This not only undermines trust but also creates an environment where misinformation can thrive. Social media platforms, in general, have a way of putting people under intense pressure to keep up with unrealistic standards, especially among teenagers. The pressure to present an idealized version of life can lead to mental health struggles, creating a cycle of comparison and self-doubt.

Adding to this concern, social media censorship has become a significant issue in recent years, especially during election cycles. We’ve seen how tech giants like META (Facebook, Instagram) and others can restrict access to certain content, shaping narratives and influencing public opinion. In some cases, these platforms can silence voices or opinions they deem "unacceptable," potentially influencing the political process or other critical areas of society. This level of power over information and free speech is unsettling, especially when such platforms dominate the public discourse.

I personally prefer to use platforms like X, Pinterest, and YouTube because they provide more educational content and allow me to engage with communities in a way that feels more positive and enriching. Unlike other social media platforms that can be overwhelming or unhealthy, these platforms offer a space where I can learn, unwind, and connect with like-minded individuals. Of course, they have their own pitfalls, but they tend to be a more relaxing and productive experience for me.

In fact, social media might pose an even greater risk to society than the technologies we often associate with the "Mark of the Beast," as it subtly manipulates people into unhealthy ways of thinking and living. The way it fosters comparison, unrealistic expectations, and, more dangerously, the control over information flow, is something that should be carefully considered when we think about the impact of technology on individuals and society.

Christians Must Stay Informed and Engage in Technology Development:

As Christians, we are called to be good stewards of the world around us, which includes the technology we use and influence. It’s not enough to sit back and wait for others to decide how these technologies will shape our future. We must actively educate ourselves, stay informed, and engage in meaningful discussions about how emerging technologies impact society and the world. The decisions made today will affect the generations that come after us, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that we are contributing to their development in a way that aligns with our values.

This is why I personally pursued my Certified Digital Asset Advisor (CDAA) certification. I wanted to stay on top of the rapidly evolving world of digital assets and cryptocurrency, and I recognized that a lack of understanding could lead to missed opportunities or, worse, exploitation. By becoming educated in these areas, I can help my clients navigate the complexities of digital assets and advise them on making informed decisions, always guided by biblical principles.

But it’s not just about us as individuals being informed. It’s about Christians in leadership positions, whether in business, technology, or government—rising to the occasion. We need more Christian leaders who are actively involved in these sectors, because it’s in these positions of influence where we can make the biggest impact. When we have people in positions of power who are committed to ethical leadership, integrity, and compassion, we can help shape the future of technology in a way that benefits everyone, not just a select few.

Imagine if we had more Christian business leaders who were focused on promoting technologies that empower people and protect their privacy, rather than exploiting them. If we had more Christian tech leaders who prioritized security and the responsible use of AI, blockchain, and other cutting-edge innovations, we could potentially avoid many of the pitfalls that technology can bring.

At the same time, it’s also about collaborating with others. We should not isolate ourselves or assume that only Christians can work on these technologies. Our mission should be to influence the direction of these innovations, guiding them to serve humanity and honor God’s creation. By fostering a community of informed, ethical leaders across all sectors, we can ensure that the decisions we make today won’t lead to harmful consequences tomorrow.

For example, listening to podcasts like Bankless and reading Bitcoin Magazine have been invaluable resources for me in staying updated on the latest trends in cryptocurrency. These platforms often discuss how the industry is evolving, the potential risks and rewards, and how we, as Christians, can respond in a way that aligns with our faith. Engaging with such content helps me stay grounded, informed, and prepared to guide my clients through the complexities of the digital world.

Navigating Technology with Wisdom and Faith:

As we look at the rapid advancement of technology, particularly in areas like cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, space exploration, and the development of technologies like Neuralink, we must remember that the impact of these innovations depends on how we choose to use them. While we should be mindful of their potential for harm, we should also recognize the immense opportunity these advancements offer to better our world and align with God’s purpose for humanity.

However, as Christians, we must stay diligent about the direction these technologies are heading. Issues like space travel and the potential for space warfare demand our attention, as they could have significant consequences for the future. Similarly, technologies like Neuralink raise profound ethical and moral questions about merging human minds with machine, questions we must carefully consider.

One area of particular concern is the rise of artificial intelligence and robotics. I recently watched the Netflix series Subservient, featuring Megan Fox, which explores a world where AI-controlled robots go rogue, causing chaos because the companies behind them prioritize profits over safety. This scenario serves as a warning about the dangers of unbridled technological advancement in the hands of bad actors. It’s a reminder of the urgency of having Christian leaders in these fields—individuals who will prioritize ethics, safety, and human dignity over financial gain.

As Christians, we are called to be diligent stewards of the knowledge and influence God has entrusted to us. This includes staying informed about emerging technologies, being proactive in their development, and advocating for responsible innovation that aligns with our faith. We need more Christians to rise up as leaders in technology, business, and governance, ensuring that ethical considerations guide every step forward.

It’s not enough to simply avoid or fear technology. As Christians, we are called to be a light in the darkness, shining in places where our influence can make a meaningful difference. Whether we are navigating digital assets, promoting ethical AI, or encouraging responsible use of social media, we have the opportunity to apply biblical principles to the world of technology and be a voice for good.

Ultimately, the question is not whether technology will become the "mark of the beast," but how we, as Christians, can engage with it wisely, responsibly, and with moral clarity. By staying informed, staying involved, and staying true to our values, we can be a force for good in a rapidly changing world, helping ensure that technology serves humanity and honors God.

Call to Action: Let’s stay diligent in learning, engaging, and leading in the world of technology. Let’s be a voice for ethical leadership, integrity, and compassion, so that technology can be used for good, not evil. And most importantly, let’s never lose sight of our mission to bring light and hope to a world that desperately needs it.
